News

We inform you that since last May 12, and as voted by the POLARCSIC Steering Board on May 11, Maria Gema Llorens will replace Santiago Giralt as coordinator of the PTI together with Adelina Geyer.

Maria Gema Llorens did her Doctoral Thesis in Structural Geology and Glaciology at the University of Tübingen and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Marine and Polar Sciences (AWI: Bremerhaven). She was also a postdoctoral researcher at the AWI until 2017 where she worked comparing ice simulations with Antarctic and Greenland ice surveys. For 5 years (2013-2017), she was coordinator of the European Research Network MicroDICE (microdynamics of ice), of the ESF. She is currently a member of the section of cryospheric sciences of the Spanish Commission of Geodesy and Geophysics.

We welcome Maria Gema Llorens and take this opportunity to thank Santiago Giralt for the time and effort he has devoted to launch and coordinate POLARCSIC during the last four years!

Addressed to all Polar Early Careers and organized jointly by POLARCSIC, SCAR Spain and APECS Spain.

The next seminar "Introduction to QGIS (II)" by the researcher Adelina Geyer (Geo3BCN - CSIC) will be held on-line  (Zoom platform) on July 11 from 9:00 to 12:00h. Those who want to participate can fill out the registration form until July 7:

NEOCLIM project Arctic Campaign

NEOCLIM is the project of the coordinated proposal NEOARCTIC that seeks to characterize the role of the main modes of climate variability that have modulated the Arctic climate of the North Atlantic for the last 4,000 years. The objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the main predominant climate conditions that have ruled the advances and retreats of the glaciers present on WGreenland and N Iceland coasts during these last 4,000 years. This knowledge will serve as a conceptual framework to determine if the present retreat of both Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) and Iceland glaciers due to the present temperature rise has a geological equivalent or not.

Webinars: "Café con Hielo"

"Café con hielo" is a series of dissemination talks that will cover current issues on polar science. The activity comes from the collaboration between the platform POLARCSIC (from the Spanish National Research Council) and APECS-Spain, with the aim of approaching polar science to the general public.

This year, we have celebrated the 2nd Edition of "Café con hielo". The series include 6 sessions. In each of them, two scientists have given a flash talk about different perspectives of the session topic and afterwards, there was an open round table, conducted by a chair related to the topic.

The webinars have been broadcasted live on Youtube. Watch them again!

Session 1: 23/03/2022 - Microplastics and contamination in the poles

Session 2: 05/04/2022 - Climate and Climate Change

Session 3 – 26/04/2022: Life under extreme conditions

Session 4 – 10/05/2022: Cryosphere
